Live in NJ, what gun is recommended?

As some of you can tell, I am fairly new to this board however, it is turning into my favorite place to hang on the net. Great info. So... I am getting prepared with food and all that and now I need protection. Just for the hell of it, I am not a big guy, I have shot a shotgun before with Goose gauge I believe. 5'10, 150 pounds. So I am curious, what is literally the best BANG for my FRN(ha)? Do you guys recommend pistols or what? I would think that a shotgun would be in ones best interest in times of need but what do you think? Rifles? anything along the sort. Thank you... The amount of money to be spent wouldn't be anywhere above,3-4 thousand with ammo I would believe. Thanks

Do you have a firearm ID card yet?
IF not, prepare to wait for about 4 months, then if you have anything on your record, including 20 year old misdemeanors you will be denied.
Welcome to new germany

Interesting. I currently live in NJ and work in NYC, and I have just this past week started researching what gun ownership in NJ entails.

Is there any advice, other then relocating, that you guys can offer. Ideally I'd like a shot gun, and a glock. I'm betting a CCW is out of the question, but for personal home defense.

because of work, its either going to be NJ, or NY. perhaps CT in a year or so. Any one familiar with gun laws/process in NY and CT?

Thanks.

I tried to go it alone in NJ and it turned into a big headache, if I were to do it again I would get a lawyer right off the bat, especially if you have anything, and I mean anything on your record. It will take at least a few months for the ID card, they will fingerprint you, run a FBI check, you even have to sign a release for them to search a medical database to see if you have even been institutionalized.
I did not even apply for a pistol permit.

If I remember correctly, NY state is easier, but around NYC it can be next to impossible.

thanks. I'm only 25, and have a clean record (unless i'm flagged for having typed the word "terrist" in an email once), and no medical problems. I'll look around for lawyers and get a price check.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I love what I do, but the industry is really only concentrated in NY, and LA/San Fran, and I am finding I disagree with the political climate of those areas.

This is scary, I am doing the same thing right now in NJ. I have to update address on fire arms purchase permit. I am looking to get a Mossberg shotgun and looking to see if I am "allowed" to get SOCOM M1A.

Looking to get out of this doomed state ASAP.

Try visiting a shooting range. They know the ropes. Also a sporting store that sells guns. A simple yellow book search will give you names. Don't know if I can list them here. ;)

Hell go for a Browning Automatic rifle! Can a semi-auto be bought or has one ever been marketed? TIA
